week 4, part 1b presentation

part 1b presentation

taking a curational approach to present the experiments I have undertaken until this point, accompanied by my research snapshot, diagrammatic theories and makings with words.

translating hands

this model illustrates a contoured hand, which along with the model brain aims to pose the hand as a space, as a landscape.

strands of cotton accompany the model as they wrap from the hand out, the cotton is fixed on the surface and then let lose

this conceptual model demonstrates the execution of thought, also creating a 'space' occupied by thought, and the translation of the intangible to the tangible, from the inside into the outside

conscious contours

contoured brain, conscious contours

the brain illustrated as a space, as a landscape

con.tour
noun
1.
the outline of a figure or body; the edge or line that defines or bounds a shape or object.
2.
contour line.
3.
Phonetics a distinctive pattern of changes in pitch, stressor tone extending across all or part of anutterance, especially across a sentence, and contributing to meaning.

mapping

this experiment illustrated quite a literal interpretation of 'body as a site'

an accurate map of Wellington city, illustrated onto the leg/foot

the path the leg/foot took through the mapped space was then mapped out, mapping the body, on the body

bound

binding; creating disconnect between the hand and arm

the hand as the primary tool of the body is executing thought, isolated by the binding of the wrist, creating a disconnect

the repetitive nature of the binding, the wrapping of the body, instructed by the opposite hand

this illustrates a closed loop, action/thought executed through the left hand onto the right

the second image, illustrates further disconnect with the hand and arm being cut out of view

stroke

markings; stroke

these markings have been made, the are isolated, disconnected from the hand; body; mind that created them.
the disconnect between the viewer of the image, and the maker of the mark is significant.

the medium in which the mark was made is identifiable to the viewer and the way in which the mark was made is also identifiable due to the textural nature.

the identifiable features of the mark bridge the viewer and the maker of the mark without seeing evidence of either side.

in analysing the 'one way process' of translation of 'thought' into 'mark making' translated through/by the body, this experiment poses an interesting aspect in that the mark has been made, translated through the body of on individual but due to the fact the 'image' we see, it is disconnected to the body and mind this mark came from, a mark made by an instrument (paint brush) consciously placed on the surface.

although this experiment illustrates what I have been analysing as a one way mark, the way this conscious mark makes on the page is open to interpretation by the 'viewer' and therefore translating into a dialogue between the mark and the viewer.

body as a site; mapping the site; mapping the body

marking the linear trajectories between existing bodily markings

map of the hand

Hand as a map

map; noun
a representation, usually on a flat surface, as of the features of an area of the earth or a portion of the heavens, showing them in their respective forms, sizes, and relationships according to some convention of representation.

The hand illustrates the hand.
The right hand holds; controls, illustrates
The left hand as a canvas, surface, subject; focus
Both hands from the same site; same body; connected to the same mind; both inhabitants of simultaneous mental space

Mapping the markings on the skin, the structure; form and shape. Navigating through this space of the palm, the intricacies and detail on the surface.

the hands illustrate

An exercise in control
Extended hands; manipulates; controls; orchestrates; choreographs

The hands are still in control of the makings made, the movements across the page. The string acts as an extension and prosthetic; offering a connection of freedom, flow and manipulation.

pain

Two images drawn from a personal series called pain.

Pain is a very personal companion; these works channel a theme of embodiment, challenging the relationship between the perceived 'inside' and 'outside'.Black illustrates a dull, consistent, overwhelming sensation, highlighting the surface of what lies beneath. "I see through a black lens; the words I speak are tainted; what you see is just a shell".
